Studio or On-Location Headshots? How to Choose What Fits You Best
When it comes to professional headshots, one of the biggest questions is: “Should I book a studio session or have my photos taken on location?”
It’s a good question — because the setting you choose says a lot about your style, your profession, and the message you want your photo to send.
At Still and Wild Photography, we’ve photographed everyone from real estate agents to CEOs to small business owners right here in Topeka, Holton, and the surrounding area — and we’ve learned that the best headshots start with choosing the right environment. Sometimes you need to be “in” your space while other times you want to be in a blank studio space. Both have a lot of value and honesty, if you and your team have time, I would suggest both. Even if you build on your headshot gallery - both options give you ways to weave in your brand story.
The Case for Studio Headshots
A studio session gives you total control — over lighting, background, and mood. Every detail is intentionally designed to make you stand out.
Why people love the studio:
Perfect lighting every time. No harsh sun, no surprise shadows.
Professional, polished look. Great for LinkedIn, websites, and business cards.
Consistency. Ideal for teams who want a cohesive look.
No distractions. It’s just you, great light, and a photographer who knows how to bring out your best expression.
If you want your headshot to look timeless, clean, and versatile — studio is your match. Bonus for teams- having a studio session controls the lights the entire session making sure everyone on your team looks congruent.
The Case for On-Location Headshots
On-location headshots bring in personality and context. Maybe that means shooting downtown against brick textures, in your workspace, or outdoors in natural light.
Why people choose on-location:
Authenticity. It shows your environment — where you actually work or create.
Warm, natural lighting. Especially flattering during morning or golden hour sessions.
Brand personality. Perfect for creatives, entrepreneurs, or anyone who wants a more relaxed and approachable feel.
I love on-location photos. There is so much story and interest that a certain location can bring to your headshots and team group shots. If there is a space you want your team photographed pay attention to the light and shadows on the ground. There are times of day spaces are more advantageous for pictures.
So… Which One Is Right for You?
Ask yourself:
Where will I use my headshots most? Corporate profiles love clean studio shots. Personal branding and small business websites often benefit from a more environmental look.
What do I want people to feel when they see me? Professional and polished? Friendly and creative? Trustworthy and approachable? Check out our Archetype Quiz to learn more about your style.
Do I need variety? Some clients do both — one classic studio image and one casual on-location shot — to fit different uses (again…this is my suggestion as an add on session or to schedule two headshot session for you and your team within a few months of each other.)
At Still and Wild, we often start with studio portraits for your professional platforms, then step outside or to a different backdrop for something a little more “you.”
The Bottom Line
Your headshot should feel like you — not like everyone else in your industry.
Whether you go for the timeless studio look or something a little more natural and location-based, the key is having a photographer who can guide you through the decision, shape the light, and bring out the expressions that make people trust you.
