Media Day is More Than Pictures — It’s About Swagger
At Still & Wild, Media Day is more than just a photo session — it’s an experience. In the day of digital post production you can do a lot to an image…but part of this whole experience is seeing it happen and being a part of it. They love being surround by fog, the lights, the snow, and all of the other effects. It’s about capturing athletes not just holding a ball, but looking confident, tough, and full of swagger. It’s about documenting the energy of your team — the grit, the pride, the sass, and the camaraderie that make sports unforgettable. Making it happen right in front of them… is key.
What to Expect on Media Day
I like to keep sessions structured so they’re smooth, fun, and efficient. Well I say that , but I am often caught up in the fun too! I have a hard time saying no to a good idea. Here’s the order of the shoot we strive for:
1. Team & Group Photos
We kick things off with your full team shot — perfect for program booklets, yearbooks, banners, and parents’ walls.
2. Individual Standard Shots
Next, each athlete gets their individual portraits. Clean, professional, and consistent across the team. These are the ones families treasure and schools use for rosters and recognition nights. These always show the student’s face…because all moms love seeing their tough as nails athlete smile!
3. Creative Individual & Small Group Shots
Once the must-haves are done, we turn up the fun. This is where the fog, lighting, and props come out. Athletes can bring the swagger — flexing muscles, showing off their gear, or just leaning into their unique personalities. Small groups of teammates can hop in for fun, themed shots, too. This part is always the favorite because it’s about energy, personality, and having a blast. We encourage students to come with ideas and be ready when it is their turn. Their ideas are often our most favorite.
Props & Creativity
Media Day doesn’t stop at jerseys and balls. The best sessions are the ones that show off personality and attitude. Some of my favorite props include:
American flags for patriotic energy
Cowboy hats, crowns, sunglasses or throne chairs for swagger
Cell phones, hammers, or disco balls for fun and unexpected twists
Game Theme night items — Many schools have “theme nights” to promote student involvement. Knowing those theme ahead of time makes creating specific images for them even more fun! A few theme ideas are: America (flags, cowboy hats etc), Camo, A favorite movie like Star Wars, a famous musician like Abba or Michael Jackson.
Pro tip: Props don’t need to be “sport” related. Sometimes the best shots come from the unexpected. Think toughness, fieriness, winning, or just pure attitude.
Pros tip two: Ask your drama or post prom sponsors/teachers if they have a prop storage you can use!
