Why a Simple, Evenly Lit Headshot Is One of the Most Useful Things You Can Have

There's a reason some of the most iconic professional portraits look so clean and timeless. It's not because the photographer did something complicated. Usually it's the opposite.

Even, flattering light is one of the most underrated tools in a headshot session. And paired with a 3/4 composition that gives you room to breathe, you end up with images that work almost everywhere you need them.

What "even light" actually means

When I talk about even light, I mean light that wraps around the face without harsh shadows, strong contrast, or dramatic falloff. It's the kind of light that softens features, evens out skin tone, and makes people look like themselves on a really good day.

It's not flat in a boring way. It's flat in a "this person looks polished and approachable" way. There's still dimension. There's still shape. Headshots can have a lot of gorgeous shadow and look amazing, but that isn’t always what we want. We want bright faces and well lit eyes!

That matters more than people realize, because when the light is fighting you, the viewer notices something is off even if they can't name what it is. When the light is right, they just see you.

Why this kind of light works for branding and social

Branding photography has to do a lot of jobs across a lot of surfaces, and even light is flexible in a way that dramatic light usually isn't. It reads well at small sizes. It holds up on a white background and a dark one. It doesn't clash with a brand color palette or fight with a header image.

When someone drops your headshot into a LinkedIn banner, a speaker bio, a website, or an email signature, they're not going to reshoot it. They're going to use what they have. Even, clean light makes that easy.

The 3/4 shot: why leaving room matters

A tight crop of just the face is fine for a profile photo. But it's limiting. When that's all you have, it's all you can do.

A 3/4 shot, where we pull back enough to show your shoulders, maybe part of your arms, and leave genuine negative space around you, gives whoever is designing or posting your image actual room to work. They can:

  • Drop text next to you without covering your face

  • Crop tight for a circle avatar or square profile image

  • Use the wider version for a website hero or speaker page

  • Pull a horizontal crop for a LinkedIn banner or email header

  • Fill a vertical frame for a story or a poster without things looking pinched

That's one image doing six jobs. That's the point.

One shoot, a lot of mileage

When we do a session that prioritizes this kind of versatility, you don't just walk away with pretty photos. You walk away with a set of images that actually slot into your life. Into your business. Into the places where people are going to find you and form their first impression of you.

You should be able to hand a headshot to your marketing person, your event coordinator, your PR contact, or your mom and have it work without anyone needing to fix it first.

Simple, even light and a thoughtful composition make that possible. And honestly, that's exactly what a good headshot should do.

About Kim | Photographer at Still and Wild

If you live in or around Topeka, you’ve probably noticed how hard it is to find headshots that actually feel real. Most people end up with photos that look stiff, overly edited, or just not like them. That’s exactly why I started Still and Wild: to create portraits that feel like you on your best day.

I’m Kim Bear, a Topeka-based photographer who believes your headshot should work as hard as you do. I specialize in professional and creative headshots that help entrepreneurs, small business owners, and professionals across Topeka, Holton, and Northeast Kansas show up with confidence. My approach is relaxed, guided, and designed to help you look natural and self-assured in every photo.

When you book a session with me, it isn’t about forcing perfection. It’s about finding that spark, the mix of calm, confidence, and personality that makes people stop scrolling and say, “That’s who I want to work with.”

Why people choose Still and Wild

Most of my clients tell me the same thing: “I hate having my picture taken.” But by the end of their session, they’re relaxed, laughing, and usually saying, “That was actually fun.” I guide you every step of the way, from what to wear to how to pose, so your photos feel effortless, natural, and flattering.

I photograph headshots, personal branding portraits, and lifestyle images throughout Topeka, Holton, and nearby Kansas communities, blending modern studio lighting with lifestyle-inspired direction. The result is a polished but personal look that helps you stand out both online and in person.

What makes Still and Wild different

The experience at Still and Wild is personal from the very beginning. You’ll never be rushed through your session or posed like everyone else. Every session is customized to highlight who you are and what makes your story unique. My goal is to help you walk away with photos that feel like you, confident, approachable, and authentic.

After years behind the camera, I’ve learned how to use light, movement, and genuine connection to bring out your most natural expressions. Many people think they’re not photogenic, but what they really need is someone who understands how to guide them comfortably through the process. I know how to capture that perfect balance between professional and real so your headshots feel natural while still looking elevated.

And then there are the results. My clients use their photos to grow their businesses, attract better opportunities, and build stronger brands. I’ve worked with professionals across Topeka and the surrounding area who tell me their new photos changed how people respond to them online and how they feel about themselves. Whether you need a LinkedIn headshot, brand photography for your business, or a creative concept for your next project, I’ll help you create images that make people stop and pay attention.
