The New Luxury Is Authenticity

AI retouching has changed photography fast. Honestly, faster than I think most people even realize.

What used to take hours in Photoshop can now happen in seconds. Skin can be smoothed automatically. Eyes can be brightened. Jawlines adjusted. Weight shifted. Hair thickened. Wrinkles softened. Entire faces subtly reshaped before anyone even asks for it.

And if I’m being honest, it has made me think a lot about what we are actually trying to accomplish with a headshot. Is our goal to create “perfect people” or to celebrate people? Plus, people are willing to fake it..to call it in. They don’t want to do the work to be real. It is easier to sit on the sofa in your sweats and ask an AI app to create a headshot of you. Right? But are you ok with how fake that is? Did you ever read the Emperor’s New Clothes? When everyone around you is confirming something fake and you believe it…. you are just naked and misguided. And no one wants that. AI tools are all over the place and they have a lot of value. They sure speed me up in a lot of ways, but where is the line that can be crossed.

Because somewhere along the way, “professional retouching” started turning into “make people look younger, thinner, smoother, and more acceptable.”

That sits weird with me.

As a Topeka headshot photographer, I absolutely want people to look polished in their photos. I want beautiful light. I want flattering angles. I want someone to walk away feeling confident and looking their best.

But I also want them to still look like themselves. In a world that is bombarded with “fake”… Authenticity is valuable and desired.

The version of themselves today.
Not the version from 20 years ago.

I think there’s a huge difference between polishing someone and replacing them.

One thing I hear often during headshot sessions is someone quietly pointing to part of their face or body and asking,
“Can you do something with this?” And honestly, what they are usually communicating is not vanity. It’s insecurity.

Maybe they’re tired.
Maybe they’re aging.
Maybe they’ve gained weight.
Maybe they’ve spent years being overly critical of themselves every time they see a photo.

That moment deserves gentleness.

My job as a professional photographer is not to decide what makes someone acceptable. My job is to help create the most confident, approachable, polished version of the person already standing in front of me.

That’s very different.

Personally, I have always felt uncomfortable with heavy editing choices that nobody even asked for. Tightening waists. Removing weight. Reshaping bodies. Completely erasing texture or age. Especially because most of the time, the client never viewed those things as flaws to begin with.

As photographers, we have to be careful not to project our own assumptions about what someone “should” look like. Just because software can change something does not mean it needs to.

And honestly? I think AI is creating a bigger cultural shift that goes beyond photography.

We are starting to mistrust what we see.
What we hear.
Even how we think about ourselves.

Have you ever used AI during a brainstorm and it responds with things like:
“That’s such a great idea.”
“You’re really onto something here.”

At first, it feels amazing. You walk away feeling like a genius.

But then later you realize something uncomfortable:
It was designed to agree with you.

Not necessarily to challenge you.
Not necessarily to be honest.
Not necessarily to tell you the hard truth.

And I think images are entering that same territory.

We can now create “perfect” photos so easily that they stop feeling trustworthy. People may not consciously know why an image feels off, but they feel it. The skin becomes too smooth. The eyes too bright. The expression too artificial. The humanity quietly disappears.

We don’t want to look at a photo of ourselves and wonder if it’s honest.

So what do we do?

We tread lightly.

I absolutely use AI tools in my editing workflow. They help speed up repetitive processes and improve efficiency tremendously. But I do not use AI to completely reinvent people.

I also work very hard to not need heavy editing in the first place.

Good lighting matters.
Thoughtful posing matters.
Good camera angles matter.
Creating a relaxed environment matters.

When someone is lit beautifully and photographed intentionally, there is far less pressure to “fix” them afterward.

That’s one of the biggest goals in my headshot and branding photography sessions in Topeka and northeast Kansas. I want people to walk into their session feeling nervous and walk out realizing they never needed to become someone else to photograph beautifully.

Real skin reflects light naturally.
Real people have texture.
Real smiles create lines.

That is not failure.
That is life.

I’m almost 50. I do not have the body or face of a 20-year-old because I’m not 20. I don’t want to look 20. I want to look healthy, confident, approachable, rested, and real. I’m actually somewhat proud of my fine lines. I earned them. They came from laughing, stress, motherhood, conversations, years of living, and years of becoming who I am.

I think a good headshot should honor that.

That doesn’t mean we can’t soften distractions. Of course we can. Temporary blemishes, harsh lighting, flyaway hairs, tired eyes from a long week… those things are not the story of who you are. Retouching absolutely has a place.

But the goal should never be to erase your humanity.

The goal is for someone to meet you in person and say:
“You look exactly like your photo.”

Maybe just a little more polished.
A little more confident.
A little more rested.

But still you.

Because at the end of the day, trust matters more than perfection ever will.

And in a world where almost everything can be artificially generated, authenticity is becoming one of the most valuable things we have left.

If you want perfection… keep on scrolling. There are lots of photographers who will wipe every line off of your face. But if you want real, authentic, valuable, and desirable Headshots… you have found the right place.

About Kim | Photographer at Still and Wild

If you live in or around Topeka, you’ve probably noticed how hard it is to find headshots that actually feel real. Most people end up with photos that look stiff, overly edited, or just not like them. That’s exactly why I started Still and Wild: to create portraits that feel like you on your best day.

I’m Kim Bear, a Topeka-based photographer who believes your headshot should work as hard as you do. I specialize in professional and creative headshots that help entrepreneurs, small business owners, and professionals across Topeka, Holton, and Northeast Kansas show up with confidence. My approach is relaxed, guided, and designed to help you look natural and self-assured in every photo.

When you book a session with me, it isn’t about forcing perfection. It’s about finding that spark, the mix of calm, confidence, and personality that makes people stop scrolling and say, “That’s who I want to work with.”

Why people choose Still and Wild

Most of my clients tell me the same thing: “I hate having my picture taken.” But by the end of their session, they’re relaxed, laughing, and usually saying, “That was actually fun.” I guide you every step of the way, from what to wear to how to pose, so your photos feel effortless, natural, and flattering.

I photograph headshots, personal branding portraits, and lifestyle images throughout Topeka, Holton, and nearby Kansas communities, blending modern studio lighting with lifestyle-inspired direction. The result is a polished but personal look that helps you stand out both online and in person.

I know how to capture that perfect balance between professional and real so your headshots feel natural while still looking elevated.

And then there are the results. My clients use their photos to grow their businesses, attract better opportunities, and build stronger brands. I’ve worked with professionals across Topeka and the surrounding area who tell me their new photos changed how people respond to them online and how they feel about themselves.
