Studio Headshots vs. On-Location Headshots: Which One Is Right for You?

If you're booking a headshot session and trying to figure out whether you should go to a studio or have a photographer come to you, here's the honest answer: it depends on what you need the photos for and how many people are getting photographed.

For most individual professionals, a studio session is the better choice. For teams of five or more, on-location almost always makes more sense. Here's why.

What Is a Studio Headshot?

A studio headshot is taken in a controlled indoor environment with a fixed backdrop and professional lighting that has been specifically set up for portraits. Because nothing changes between sessions, the lighting is consistent, predictable, and optimized for making people look their best.

At Still and Wild, the studio is in Holton, Kansas, about 30 miles north of Topeka. Individual sessions happen here. Everything is already set up when you arrive, which means the whole session can happen in 10 to 30 minutes.

What Is an On-Location Headshot?

An on-location headshot is taken outside the studio — at your office, a outdoor space, or any environment that feels meaningful to your brand. For team headshot days, on-location means we bring the studio to you: backdrop, professional lighting equipment, everything. The quality doesn't drop just because we left the building.

On-location doesn't mean natural light leaning against a brick wall. It means a full professional setup in your space.

When to Choose a Studio Session

A studio session is the right call if:

  • You are an individual professional who needs one great headshot

  • You want a clean, timeless look that works on LinkedIn, your website, and marketing materials without feeling tied to a specific place or time

  • You want multiple looks in a short session (different expressions, a wardrobe change)

  • You don't want to coordinate a whole event around getting a photo

The studio environment is also ideal if you feel nervous about having your photo taken. There are no distractions, no employees walking through the background, no one watching. It's just you and the camera, which makes it easier to relax and get a natural result.

When to Choose On-Location

On-location makes more sense if:

  • You have a team of five or more people who all need headshots

  • Pulling everyone to a studio is logistically impractical

  • Your office or environment is part of your brand story and you want that to come through in the images

  • You are doing a branding session and want lifestyle shots that show you in your actual work environment

For large organizations especially, on-location team headshot days are the practical choice. We build the schedule, bring the full setup, and photograph everyone in their own building. Your team doesn't have to go anywhere, and you end up with consistent images across the whole organization.

The Lighting Question Everyone Asks

People sometimes assume that on-location headshots won't look as polished as studio ones. That's only true if the photographer relies on whatever light happens to be available at your location.

At Still and Wild, the lighting equipment comes with us on every on-location session. We don't walk into your conference room and hope the overhead fluorescents are flattering. We set up the same professional lighting we use in the studio, which means the quality of the final images is the same regardless of where we shoot.

The main difference between studio and on-location isn't quality. It's logistics.

What About Outdoor Headshots?

Outdoor headshots can look great, but they come with tradeoffs. Natural light is unpredictable, weather is a factor, and getting consistent results across a whole team is harder when you're working with sunlight that changes by the hour.

For branding sessions where lifestyle and environment matter, outdoor images can add a lot. But for standard professional headshots, especially team headshots where consistency is the whole point, a controlled lighting setup almost always produces a better and more reliable result.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between studio and on-location headshots? Studio headshots are taken in a fixed indoor environment with pre-set professional lighting and a backdrop. On-location headshots are taken at your office or another space, with the photographer bringing lighting equipment to you. For individual sessions, studio headshots are typically more efficient. For teams, on-location is usually more practical.

Are on-location headshots lower quality than studio headshots? Not if the photographer brings professional lighting. The quality difference between studio and on-location comes from the lighting setup, not the location itself. At Still and Wild, we bring the same lighting equipment to on-location sessions that we use in the studio, so the results are consistent regardless of where we shoot.

How much do studio headshots cost vs. on-location? Individual studio sessions at Still and Wild start at $150 for a single image and $500 for a full 30-minute session. On-location team headshot days start at $150 per person for teams of up to 24 people, and $75 per person for groups of 25 or more.

Can I get outdoor headshots? Yes. Outdoor images work well for branding sessions where lifestyle and environmental context matter. For standard professional headshots, especially team headshots where consistency is important, a controlled lighting setup typically produces better and more predictable results.

Should I go to a studio or have the photographer come to me? If you are an individual professional, going to the studio is usually the easier and faster option. If you are coordinating headshots for a team of five or more people, having the photographer come to your location is almost always more practical and less disruptive to your workday.

About Kim | Photographer at Still and Wild

If you live in or around Topeka, you’ve probably noticed how hard it is to find headshots that actually feel real. Most people end up with photos that look stiff, overly edited, or just not like them. That’s exactly why I started Still and Wild: to create portraits that feel like you on your best day.

I’m Kim Bear, a Topeka-based photographer who believes your headshot should work as hard as you do. I specialize in professional and creative headshots that help entrepreneurs, small business owners, and professionals across Topeka, Holton, and Northeast Kansas show up with confidence. My approach is relaxed, guided, and designed to help you look natural and self-assured in every photo.

When you book a session with me, it isn’t about forcing perfection. It’s about finding that spark, the mix of calm, confidence, and personality that makes people stop scrolling and say, “That’s who I want to work with.”

Why people choose Still and Wild

Most of my clients tell me the same thing: “I hate having my picture taken.” But by the end of their session, they’re relaxed, laughing, and usually saying, “That was actually fun.” I guide you every step of the way, from what to wear to how to pose, so your photos feel effortless, natural, and flattering.

I photograph headshots, personal branding portraits, and lifestyle images throughout Topeka, Holton, and nearby Kansas communities, blending modern studio lighting with lifestyle-inspired direction. The result is a polished but personal look that helps you stand out both online and in person.

The experience at Still and Wild is personal from the very beginning. You’ll never be rushed through your session or posed like everyone else. Every session is customized to highlight who you are and what makes your story unique. My goal is to help you walk away with photos that feel like you, confident, approachable, and authentic.

After years behind the camera, I’ve learned how to use light, movement, and genuine connection to bring out your most natural expressions. Many people think they’re not photogenic, but what they really need is someone who understands how to guide them comfortably through the process. I know how to capture that perfect balance between professional and real so your headshots feel natural while still looking elevated.

And then there are the results. My clients use their photos to grow their businesses, attract better opportunities, and build stronger brands. I’ve worked with professionals across Topeka and the surrounding area who tell me their new photos changed how people respond to them online and how they feel about themselves. Whether you need a LinkedIn headshot, brand photography for your business, or a creative concept for your next project, I’ll help you create images that make people stop and pay attention.
